Malaysia: Travel Warnings for Sabah
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Both the U.S. State Department and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs released warnings about travel to coastal areas of Sabah on the island of Borneo, citing credible reports that terrorists are planning kidnappings at resorts frequented by foreigners on Sabah’s east coast and offshore islands. Several such incidents have occurred here in the last few years, the most recent in March 2005, but Malaysian authorities have increased security as a result. The terrorist group Abu Sayyaf, based in the southern Philippines, has been responsible for some of these incidents resulting in the deaths of some hostages. Malaysian officials dismissed the warnings, saying that visitors to established resorts are safe because of the increased security measures, but that it is harder to guarantee safety for travelers to remote areas.
