Russia

Visitors are still falling for a scam that has been worked on tourists in Moscow for years. A man drops a wallet or roll of cash in front of the tourist and continues on apparently not knowing he has dropped it. Another man picks it up and through gestures suggests that he and the tourist split the money. They do so and he leaves, then a moment later the first man returns and accosts the tourist, demanding his money back, and then when he finds only half of it is there he demands it all back, becoming threatening if the tourist doesn’t give him more money. In most cases the tourist does, out of guilt or embarrassment. In some cases, the crook even snatches the tourist’s wallet and flees. If you see someone drop a wallet, don’t pick it up, and don’t engage with anyone who does.
