The last year has seen a significant increase in threats and incidents targeting non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Individuals working for international aid and missionary groups have been attacked in several countries in the region, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan. NGOs reported a 75 percent increase in incidents worldwide between 2003 and 2004. The security situation remains volatile as extremists have attacked both individuals and the institutions they work for.
