East Africa: Travel Warning
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The U.S. State Department reissued its public announcement warning of terrorist threats throughout East Africa, reminding travelers that targets could include clubs, restaurants, shopping centers, outdoor recreation events, resorts and other places Westerners congregate. The announcement also added warnings about seaborne travel near the Horn of Africa and in the southern Red Sea. Unknown pirates have attacked boats in the area on several occasions in the last year. The State Department recommends traveling in convoys especially around Yemen and maintaining good communications contact at all times. In a separate warning for Kenya, the State Department reported that it continues to receive indications of terrorist threats and warned that Kenyan authorities have a limited ability to detect and deter such acts. In addition, it reported that there is a particular threat against Americans in Nairobi, as well as increasing crime, including carjacking and robbery, especially after dark.
