Egypt: Bombings in Sharm el-Sheikh
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |A series of bombings ripped the Sinai resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in the early hours of July 23, a time when the city is bustling with activity because most residents and tourists stay out late at night because of the heat during the day. At least three explosions, two of them car bombs, hit hotels and a busy market popular with European and Arab tourists. At least 83 people were killed and more than 200 injured. The attack, targeting the tourism industry which is vital to Egypt’s economy, was the fourth serious incident in the past nine months following eight years of calm created by severe police crackdowns. The coordinated bombings suggest a well-organized terrorist cell or group.
