Turkey: Another Bombing in Aegean Tourist Region
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The second bombing in less than a week in an Aegean tourist area has locals and visitors on edge. The July 16 bombing of a bus carrying tourists to the beach in Kusadasi killed five, including a British man and an Irish woman. The bomb was reportedly planted by a young woman who got off the bus shortly before the explosion. A Kurdish militant group called the Kurdish Freedom Falcons (TAK) claimed responsibility for the attack and the previous bombing in the nearby resort town of Cesme on July 10. The group has vowed a summer bombing campaign that will not distinguish between government, military or civilian targets. The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), originally suspected in the Cesme incident, disavowed any connection with the bombings. This coastal region near Izmir is popular with British and Irish travelers, and the foreign affairs departments of both the U.K. and Ireland have warned their citizens to be cautious here, especially in places where foreigners congregate. Security has been tightened throughout the region.
