Turkey: Bombing in Tourist Town

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | July 13th, 2005 | Trackback

A bomb exploded in a trash can in the tourist town of Cesme, some 44 miles from Izmir, injuring ten people July 10. No one claimed responsibility for the blast, but authorities are concerned that the Kurdish group PKK may be responsible. The PKK is considered a terrorist group by the U.S. and E.U., and claimed responsibility for a bomb in the Aegean resort town of Kusadasi that killed one and injured two April 30. The group called a truce in its violent push for an independent Kurdish state in 1999, but in June 2004 declared the truce over, claiming that the government had not responded in kind. The group has threatened to spread its war across Turkey and to target the tourism industry.
