United Kingdom: London Bombings
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |London is getting back to normal following the terrorist bombings of the Underground subway system and a bus that killed 52 people July 7. Residents and tourists alike have been determined not to let the attacks change their plans, with the number of passengers on the Underground back to normal by Monday, July 11, and fewer tourists than expected canceling their visits. Portions of the Tube lines affected by the bombings will remain closed until the investigation has progressed, but the overall system is functioning. Check with London Transport for specific details before trying to reach Russell Square or King’s Cross. The bombings produced heightened security in cities throughout Europe, North America and Asia, and raised the specter of future incidents, if only because the technique for such an attack is so simple. Early reports suggest that the bombs placed on the trains weighed no more than ten pounds and were carried in simple backpacks. Anyone with a knowledge of bomb making and access to explosives can accomplish such a deed.
