Central Europe: Floods
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Three days of torrential rain caused extensive flooding in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria. In Switzerland, rail service through the Alps to Italy was shut down and many major roads were closed. Several villages, including the resort town of Grindelwald, were cut off and floods threatened parts of Interlaken and Bern, the capital city. The area affected runs from the Bernese Alps to St. Gallen. Water levels appeared to be stabilizing Aug. 24. In Germany, the Bavarian resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen was cut off by flood waters and authorities declared a disaster alert. In Austria, the Kleinwalsertal Valley bordering Bavaria was also isolated. Many areas in the other affected countries were threatened by flooding and landslides.
