China: Tourist Killed by Lightning

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | August 16th, 2005 | Trackback

A Greek tourist was killed and her companion injured by lightning on the Great Wall in an area known as Simatai in Miyun county near Beijing Aug. 12. Lightning strikes on the Great Wall are fairly common because in many places it is the highest point on the landscape. The Simatai section of the wall is equipped with lightning rods but in this case they didn’t protect the Greek couple who were struck. The best option is to avoid travel to the wall during thunderstorms, or to leave the wall if a thunderstorm rolls in.
