Fiji: Coup Threat

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | August 3rd, 2005 | Trackback

The army has threatened a coup if a controversial bill is passed granting amnesty to those involved in a coup in 2000 that overthrew the government of Fiji’s first ethnically Indian prime minister. George Speight, the leader of the 2000 coup, is serving a life sentence and other key plotters are also in jail. Army commanders imposed martial law to resolve the situation in 2000, and say they will do so again should the law pass. On a health note, an outbreak of typhoid is occurring in the northern province of Bua. At least 45 people have contracted the waterborne disease but are being treated. No one has died, and thus far the source of the disease has not been determined.
