Malaysia: Fake Cops Prey on Tourists in Kuala Lumpur

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | August 30th, 2005 | Trackback

A group of Middle Eastern men posing as police have been robbing tourists in Kuala Lumpur. They move in groups of two or three and carry fake “authority cards” identifying them as police, which they use to intimidate their victims after accusing them of an offense and threatening to arrest them. In most cases the phony cops have asked to see the victims’ wallets and then removed cash, but in a recent case they threatened the victim with a knife and stole a gold chain from him as well. The gang has been working the Bukit Bintang area. Police believe they have good descriptions of the criminals and have alerted patrols.
