Mexico: World’s Kidnap Capital

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | August 9th, 2005 | Trackback

Mexico has overtaken Colombia as the world leader in reported kidnappings, with 194 from January through June compared to Colombia’s 172 and Brazil’s 169. All three countries are believed to have many more incidents that go unreported because of corruption and mistrust of authorities. Most of these kidnappings are done for ransom, and authorities do not get directly involved unless the victims’ families ask for help. The statistics were compiled from official police records by the private group, Citizen Council for Public Safety.
