East Africa: Terrorist Threats

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | 1 comment | September 27th, 2005 | Trackback

The U.S. State Department has reissued its public announcement warning of terrorist threats in East Africa, especially along the coast, and in the seas near the Horn of Africa, including the Red Sea near Yemen. Several incidents of maritime piracy have occurred here in the last year, and vessels are urged to travel in convoys and maintain close radio contact at all times. Extremists are active throughout East Africa. In the past they have not hesitated to attack civilians, and soft targets such as shopping centers, resorts, places of worship and other areas where Westerners congregate could be at risk. Terrorists may also target civil aviation and seaports.
