Mexico: Drug Crime Crackdown in Acapulco, Zihuatanejo
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |“Operation Safe Mexico” is a police campaign to quell the wave of violence from drug cartels fighting turf wars over lucrative smuggling routes to the U.S. It was launched June 11 in the states of Baja California Norte, Sinaloa and Tamaulipas, and then expanded to Michoacan and the area around Mexico City. In the coming days it will be expanded to the resort cities of Acapulco and Zihuatanejo and the Guerrero state capital of Chilpancingo. How it will be implemented in the resorts remains to be seen, because authorities do not want to frighten away tourists, the lifeblood of these economies. Drug trafficking has become an increasingly significant problem across the nation, with some 800 deaths this year attributed to these turf wars, many in the areas along the U.S.-Mexico border.
