Pakistan: Bombings at Karachi KFC and McDonald’s

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | September 13th, 2005 | Trackback

Homemade bombs exploded within minutes of each other at two American fast-food outlets in an upscale Karachi district Sept. 9, one at a KFC in Clifton and the other at a McDonald’s on Sea View Road. The bombs were timed to go off when few people would be endangered but injured five people in a car when its windows blew out. Authorities believe the bombings were tied to an anti-President Musharraf strike staged by a coalition of conservative Islamic parties. Both franchises have been attacked before, with a separate KFC outlet being burned to the ground May 30 by a mob incensed over a suicide bombing at a Shi’ite mosque in a predominantly Sunni district. These and other American businesses can become the target of rage because of a general anti-American sentiment here, and the incidents are a reminder to minimize time spent in places Westerners tend to congregate.
