Corsica: Ferry Strike Settled
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Workers at the SNCM ferry company that services routes from France to Corsica and North Africa ended a 24-day strike Oct. 14 that had driven the company to the brink of bankruptcy. The strike was called to protest the privatization of the company and fueled intense passions. Workers hijacked a passenger ship that was later stormed by helicopter-transported commandos, shut down the port of Marseille for two weeks, disrupting the city’s transport system, and triggered nationalist demonstrations in Corsica. The strike finally ended when it became clear that the company would dissolve and all jobs would be lost if a privatization plan was not implemented. The French government agreed to retain a 25 percent stake in the company and reduce staff through early retirements rather than layoffs. Service resumed Oct. 14.
