Papua New Guinea: New Tourist Police Force
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Aware of its reputation for rampant crime, Papua New Guinea is introducing a force of tourist police to protect visitors. The plan calls for local police commanders in tourist centers to appoint officers to work in communities with elders and youth to help create a safe environment for tourism. Crime gangs operate mostly in cities and prey on locals and tourists alike. The police here also have a reputation for violence, with beatings of suspects common.
