Worldwide: Possible Delays on Flights to U.S.

New security regulations implemented by U.S. Customs and Border Protection require passengers flying to the U.S. to provide detailed information about their intended visits. This information includes the address they will stay on arrival, the hotel they will be checking into, or, if the first night is not booked, an explanation of where they will go, such as to pick up a rental car to begin a tour. The rules are part of a law passed in 2002 but are just now being enforced. A KLM official raised concerns that these regulations would double check-in times at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport and urged passengers to check in online to reduce delays. Long lines did develop on Monday but were believed to have been caused more by heavy rain than the new requirements. Until airlines get used to collecting this information, however, it will be prudent to arrive early to check in for flights to the U.S.
