East Africa: Pirates Attack Cruise Ship off the Horn of Africa

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | 1 comment | November 8th, 2005 | Trackback

A pirate attack on a Seabourn cruise ship off the coast of Somalia Nov. 5 reinforced the notion that these seas are dangerous. Pirates from largely lawless Somalia have been preying on ships at will in the past year, launching 28 reported incidents since March 15 compared with two in all of 2004. Their most notorious attack was capturing a UN aid ship and holding it for 100 days this summer. In the cruise ship attack, pirates in two small boats fired rifles and rocket-propelled grenades into the ship but were unable to board when the captain sped up and changed course. Only one person, a crewman, was injured and the ship bypassed its planned stop in Mombasa, Kenya, itself a place where terrorist attacks have occurred in recent years, in favor of the Seychelles.

I care about those rich, pompous pleasure seekers being attacked by pirates in as much as they care about me and my debt and my inability to be along side them regaling and smiling and laughing.
