India: Blasts in Delhi Markets
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Three coordinated bombings at crowded Delhi markets Oct. 29 killed at least 61 and injured 188. The blasts came just days before the Hindu festival of Diwali and the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr, and were claimed by an obscure separatist group with ties to Lashkar-e-Toiba, a Pakistan-based group fighting for self-determination in Kashmir. Lashkar-e-Toiba later denied involvement, saying they do not target civilians. The motive may have been to disrupt peace talks over Kashmir between India and Pakistan, or to protest the pending sentences of group members convicted in the bombing of Delhi’s Red Fort in December 2000. Sentencing was scheduled for Oct. 30 but deferred until Oct. 31. The blast occurred in Paharganj, Sarojini Nagar and Govindpuri. Paharganj has many cheap hotels that cater to Western backpackers. Security is on high alert.
