Mexico: Cancun and Riviera Maya Recovering from Wilma

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | November 1st, 2005 | Trackback

As Cancun recovers from Hurricane Wilma, the airport’s control tower and navigation equipment have been restored and regular commercial flights have resumed. Power supplies are being restored throughout the region. Tourists are beginning to return, especially to the Riviera Maya south of Cancun, an area that was hit less severely and has 10,000 hotel rooms available. Rebuilding Cancun will require extensive reconstruction, with most of the highways and about 60 percent of the city streets damaged, but hopes are high that much of the tourist infrastructure can be ready for visitors by Dec. 15. President Vicente Fox vowed to “re-inaugurate” Cancun on that date, when he said 80 percent of its hotel rooms should be ready again.
