Thailand: Attacks in the Southern Provinces
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Trouble continued in the far south of the country where Islamic militants are waging a terror campaign against the Thai government. A series of coordinated attacks against “village defenders” in some 30 places in Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala provinces occurred Oct. 27. The attacks were believed to be a show of force to intimidate villagers and discourage cooperation with authorities. On the same day, a passenger train traveling from the Malaysian border was derailed by two bombs on the tracks, with no deaths and one injury. The incident prompted the Australian government to warn its citizens against non-essential travel to Thailand’s four southern provinces. It was the first time a moving train in the area was attacked.
