Uganda: British Tourist Killed in Murchisons Falls

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | November 13th, 2005 | Trackback

A British tourist was killed and foreigners and non-government organizations (NGOs) have been threatened in northern Uganda by Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), an insurgent group that has been fighting the government for 19 years. The tourist was killed Nov. 9 in an ambush in Murchisons Falls National Park when he went with others to assist white-water rafters who’d had an accident. In four other incidents in October the rebels attacked NGO vehicles, killing four people. LRA leader Joseph Kony ordered his men to shoot NGO vehicles and kill NGO workers to protest an arrest warrant issued for him by the International Criminal Court Oct. 14. Travel to northern Uganda should be avoided.
