Australia: Riots in Sydney

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | December 13th, 2005 | Trackback

Two nights of violence occurred around Sydney, with varying opinions on the source of the trouble. Some call it racist violence, others criminal gang trouble, others the eruption of an underclass frustrated with economic disparity. The first incident occurred at Cronulla Beach Dec. 11 when mobs of what police called white supremacists attacked Middle Eastern youths. The Lebanese youths then struck back that night, smashing cars and clashing with police in several Sydney suburbs. The next night, hundreds of Muslims got into a standoff with police outside a mosque, then drove to Cronulla and smashed cars and windows with baseball bats. These incidents, and any trend they might suggest, should not affect travel in Sydney or elsewhere unless you get caught up in the violence.
