Peru: Police Protecting Train Service to Machu Picchu
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Train service between Cuzco and Machu Picchu was shut down for a day when local residents threatened to attack the railway to protest what they consider municipal corruption and the refusal of the government to authorize a competing railway company. In recent weeks, protestors have blocked rail access to the famed archaeological site and this time they planned to take over at least one station. Rail service resumed Dec. 16 when police agreed to guard stations along the route. PeruRail, the company that operates the only train to Machu Picchu, says that it does not oppose sharing the line with other companies.
