United Arab Emirates: Dangerous Drivers
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The Persian Gulf countries have some of the world’s highest auto accident rates, with traffic deaths now the second-leading cause of death, after heart disease. According to the World Health Organization, countries in the Eastern Mediterranean region, including most Arab countries, has a traffic accident death rate of 26.3 per 100,000 population. Only Africa is higher at 28.3, while North and South America are 15.7 and Europe is 14.5. Persian Gulf nations are the worst offenders in the Arab world; the UAE rate is 21 deaths per 100,000. Most of the accidents are caused by reckless driving and speeding.
