France: State of Emergency Lifted

The state of emergency imposed Nov. 8 to control riots that broke out in the Paris suburbs, spread throughout the country and lasted for three weeks, was lifted Jan. 4. The law allowed curfews, police searches inside and outside homes and other emergency measures. President Jacques Chirac decided to rescind the order more than six weeks ahead of schedule following an essentially violence-free New Year’s celebration.
