India: Crime Increase in Agra, Insurgent Violence in Assam

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | January 31st, 2006 | Trackback

Crimes against foreign tourists have increased in Agra, home of the Taj Mahal, motivating tourism industry leaders to call for a tourist police force for the city. The number of reported crimes has not been high—only a half dozen in the past two months—but they have ranged from petty theft to attempted sexual assault, and no suspects have been caught. Plans for tourist police in Agra have been in the works for years, but nothing has been implemented, and the current police force says it cannot improve security without more resources, both in terms of officers and funding. In other news, in the northeastern state of Assam a rebel group has stepped up its anti-government campaign with 18 separate bombings Jan. 20-24. Many of the explosions targeted power, oil and security-related sites, and three took place in the capital city of Guwahati. Three people were killed and many were injured. Tourists have not been injured in the violence, but further attacks cannot be ruled out, with uncertain consequences.
