Mexico: Drug Gang Violence in Acapulco, Recovery in Cancun
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The Pacific coast resort of Acapulco has seen increasing drug-gang violence in the past year, and a dramatic shootout with police took place Jan. 27 just blocks from the main tourist area. The suspects were killed and four police officers were injured. To reduce tensions, hundreds of local and federal police were deployed to secure the area and set up checkpoints on main roads. They have been searching vehicles they deem suspicious, so travel by car could be delayed. On the Caribbean coast, the resort of Cancun is gradually recovering from the devastating Hurricane Wilma in October. Mexico’s largest hotel operator, Grupo Posadas, plans to reopen two hotels in Cancun and one on Cozumel within three weeks. Some 80 percent of all Cancun hotels were damaged in the storm, and the government expects work to restore the resort’s beaches to take up to a year. Wilma washed them almost completely away.
