Tanzania: Kilimanjaro Rockslide Kills Three

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | January 10th, 2006 | Trackback

Climbing any mountain has its hazards even if no technical climbing is involved. Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak at 19,340 feet, is considered one of the easiest of the “seven summits,” the highest mountains on the seven continents, even if it requires a long, arduous trek. Now it has an additional risk: melting summit glaciers have loosened boulders that used to be stable. A rockslide recently hit two climbing groups at about 15,000 feet, killing three and seriously injuring five others. Four Americans were among the dead and injured. Some 25,000 people annually attempt to climb the mountain; fewer than half succeed.
