Thailand: Assault in Koh Samui
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Trouble can happen anywhere, even in a place that feels like paradise. A 21-year-old Welsh woman was raped and murdered Jan. 1 when she was walking the beach at night on Koh Samui, one of Thailand’s most popular tourist islands. She went for a stroll on Lamai beach when her mother called on her cell phone and was attacked by two workers from a fishing trawler anchored nearby. The crime shocked local officials and island residents, and authorities made a major effort to find the perpetrators, eventually obtaining confessions. The assault was apparently not premeditated. The fishermen had been drinking and watching pornographic videos, had gone for a swim, and came upon the victim. They attacked her because she was alone.

This isn’t as unusual as some may think, Koh Samui has three murders a month.
