Puerto Rico: New Anti-Smoking Law Will Be Toughest in Caribbean
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Puerto Rico may soon have the toughest anti-smoking law in the Caribbean now that the legislature has passed a bill banning smoking in bars, restaurants and other public buildings to protect workers’ health. The governor has said he will sign the bill, to take effect next year, but some people in the tourism industry worry that the law could have a chilling effect on tourism, especially on the casinos where many gamblers like to smoke while they play. Supporters of the bill feel banning smoking will enhance the island as a tourist destination.
