South Africa: Rail Strikes

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | February 14th, 2006 | Trackback

Rail transit drivers and guards in Cape Town planned to strike Feb. 15 to protest the company’s restructuring, and further strikes are possible because workers are caught in a double bind where management is pressuring them to keep to schedules while threatening criminal charges for any passenger deaths. The issue arose because many of the rail cars’ doors are broken or missing, and passengers have been known to be pushed out of crowded cars. The drivers and guards insist that management fix the system, but the government has not allocated the necessary funds.
