Tanzania: Drought Cuts Off Power Supply

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | February 7th, 2006 | Trackback

A severe drought has forced Tanzania to ration electricity because water at the country’s main hydroelectric source has dropped to a critical level. Power is now being cut off from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, but is available overnight to prevent a surge of crime due to darkness. The national power company is able to supply only half the country’s needs, but hopes that a new turbine to become operational mid-March in Dar es Salaam will bring power production back up to what the country requires.
