Bangladesh: Peace Corps Pulls Out, Terrorist Leaders Arrested
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Authorities arrested five of the top seven leaders of a banned Islamic militant group (Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh) believed responsible for numerous bombings, striking a blow against terrorism, but one result has been the suspension of Peace Corps activity throughout the country. The Peace Corps removed all 70 of its volunteers and suspended operations indefinitely based on an assessment of the overall security situation in Bangladesh. A key issue was a concern that Peace Corps staff could become the targets of reprisal attacks by JMB activists. The Peace Corps only returned to Bangladesh in 1998 after a 30-year hiatus.
