Botswana: Areas of Central Kalahari Game Reserve Closed

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | March 28th, 2006 | Trackback

The government has closed the southern and southwestern sections of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve allegedly because domestic animals in the area have diseases that could spread to wildlife. The real reason may be to keep tourists and the press out of the areas where the government forcibly removed Bushmen from their ancestral lands in a series of operations since 1997. Bushmen have been fighting the government in court to be allowed to return, and some have straggled back illegally. Whether the Bushmen will be able to stay or are again removed, for now these areas of the reserve will remain closed to tourists.
