France: Massive Protests Against New Labor Law
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Two weeks of demonstrations culminated in massive protests around the country March 28, with some 2.7 million gathering to oppose a proposed labor law. Violence erupted in the heart of Paris at the main demonstration in Place de la Republique. The Eiffel Tower was closed and transportation services were disrupted. Over the last two weeks, some demonstrations were spontaneous and some were planned and publicized. Further demonstrations could occur, and all large gatherings should be avoided because of their tendency to become violent. The current crisis is likely to pass, possibly with a government compromise on the new law, but the issue is unlikely to disappear because some measure of labor reform will probably be necessary to strengthen France’s economy and reduce high unemployment.
