Italy: Disagreement on Mt. Vesuvius’s Threat to Naples
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Mt. Vesuvius, the volcano that buried Pompeii and looms over Naples will erupt again someday, and a recent American-Italian joint study claims that current evacuation plans don’t go far enough to protect the three million people living near the volcano. The paper, published by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, reports that a Bronze Age eruption spread hot lava over and beyond current Naples, thus the entire city is in danger. The head of Italy’s Vulcanology Institute, however, quickly rejected such claims, saying Vesuvius is the world’s most studied volcano, that the claim has no statistical support, and evacuation plans are sufficient and will not be changed. For the lay person it’s hard to know who’s right, but the message may be, see Naples sooner rather than later.
