Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur Shops Pay Kickbacks
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Proving that the obvious can sometimes go undetected, the Malaysian Tourism Ministry has come to the conclusion that some shops overcharge tourists and pay kickbacks to tour companies for bringing tourists to their shops. This is about the oldest practice in tourism but in Kuala Lumpur there may be a crackdown on it because the government wants to protect its tourism industry and stem any bad reputation the country might get as a place that cheats tourists. Tourism Ministry officials may station officers at shopping malls to identify stores that engage in this practice, especially during the Kuala Lumpur Grand Prix City Sale March 11-27 involving 5,000 retailers from around the country. The sale coincides with the Formula One Grand Prix to be held at the Sepang International Circuit March 17-19.
