New Zealand: Trekking Adventures Have their Risks
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Hiking on the South Island of New Zealand draws some million tourist a year, but the deaths of two visitors in February have authorities wondering if too many people underestimate the dangers of backcountry treks because of New Zealand’s benign reputation. According to a Department of Conservation manager, once hikers are an hour or so away from the road they are more or less on their own. The terrain can be difficult and the weather patterns changeable and fierce. The advice from authorities is to thoroughly research trips and know what equipment is necessary, then bring it with you or buy it before heading out.
