Northern Ireland: New Hotel in Heart of the “Troubles”

In the village of Crossmaglen in County Armagh, on the border with the Republic of Ireland, the Cross Square Hotel opened on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. It is said to be the first hotel to open in the village in more than 100 years, a village that was once considered the world’s most dangerous posting for a British soldier because of IRA activities during the “Troubles.” The hotel’s owners expect tourists who come will be curious about the violence of the past, but also feel the area has a lot more to offer. This is no doubt true, but if nothing else the hotel’s opening represents one certainty: progress has been made in the long-running conflict between Catholics and Protestants, Republicans and Loyalists. And maybe the Troubles are truly part of the past.
