Thailand: Anti-Thaksin Demonstrations Grow
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Large demonstrations demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra have occurred in Bangkok repeatedly for more than a month, and political tensions are growing. Thaksin has threatened to impose a state of emergency if protests turn violent, which would allow police to arrest protest leaders. His supporters have been coming to Bangkok from the countryside, and police believe clashes are possible. A small bomb exploded outside a former prime minister’s house March 9 and slightly injured two people, one a British tourist. Authorities believe the bomb was set to add to an aura of instability. It would be prudent to avoid demonstrations because of the possibility of violence and a police crackdown.
