Egypt: Bombings in Sinai Resort Town

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | April 25th, 2006 | Trackback

The third terrorist attack in less than two years on the Sinai Peninsula claimed 23 lives and injured dozens in the popular resort of Dahab April 24. The three nearly simultaneous bombings struck in the evening when the streets were full of tourists shopping or going to bars and restaurants, and occurred when Egyptians were celebrating two holidays that coincided this year, the Coptic Christian Easter weekend and Shem al-Nessim, a traditional holiday marking the beginning of spring. Authorities have not yet named suspects in the attack, and no group has claimed responsibility. Israeli officials have been warning against travel to the Sinai for months, fearing such an attack was imminent. The attack came just five days after Egyptian officials arrested 22 suspects and reported they had broken up a terrorist organization that was plotting attacks on tourists and facilities around Cairo.
