Indonesia: Ongoing Terrorist Threat, Rogue Waves in Bali
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta warned that a serious threat of terrorist attacks remains in Indonesia, citing reports that mentioned April 2 as a potential date for an attack. No such violence occurred that day, but risks to Westerners and Western interests and facilities are ongoing, and an incident could occur at any time. According to the Embassy, reports suggest that “attacks could include targeting individual Americans.” The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs issued a similar warning. Indonesian authorities tightened security in Jakarta and added security personnel at prime tourist areas in Bali.
In other news, a freak wave spawned by Cyclone Glenda off Australia killed an Indonesian swimmer at Legian beach in Bali when he and his friends were swept away. Nearby Kuta beach was temporarily closed as a result. The incident is a reminder to stay abreast of weather patterns when on beach vacations, even if a storm seems sufficiently distant, and watch for rogue waves.
