Mexico: Cancun Recovers

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | April 18th, 2006 | Trackback

Last October Hurricane Wilma destroyed or damaged most of Cancun’s hotels and swept away virtually all of its beach sand, but the recovery is nearing completion, at least as far as the average tourist is concerned. Two-thirds of the hotels have reopened and the beach is back, ahead of schedule thanks to favorable weather and round-the-clock efforts by the Belgian dredging company that is doing the job. Cancun does not have a natural beach, and restoring it requires vacuuming up sand from the ocean floor more than 20 miles away and depositing it on the beachfront. The beach re-creation effort got under way in February and was expected to take until the end of April, but was completed two weeks early.
