Costa Rica: Armed Robberies on the Road from San José’s Airport

Since December, the U.S. Embassy has received 11 reports of armed robberies of Americans traveling from San Jose’s Juan Santamaria Airport in cars heading west on the Pan-American Highway between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. In some cases the criminals have punctured a tire either before the tourists left the rental agency or at one of many stop signs along the way. Then they pull in to offer assistance once the car stops for repair. In other cases they have pulled alongside and indicated something is wrong with the car’s tires, and in some cases they have simply forced the car off the road or off an exit ramp. Guns have been used in most incidents. The best way to avoid this crime is to arrive during daylight hours and avoid driving at night. Police have increased patrols along the highway since the incidents were reported.
