India: Police Clobber Motorcyclists without Helmets
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Tensions are high in the city of Hyderabad where police have been overzealous in enforcing a law that requires motorcycle riders to wear helmets. Two riders have died from head injuries when being struck with truncheons by police, and a third had an eye put out. Near riots ensued May 29 to protest the police actions, and the state’s human rights commissioner has demanded the police explain themselves. People ride motorcycles without wearing helmets all over India, but clearly Hyderabad is one place to put one on.
