Italy: Rome’s $1,000 Beer

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | May 9th, 2006 | Trackback

Rome has a reputation for fleecing the unwary, but the 990 euro (1,257 dollar) beer a Hong Kong tourist bought at a bar in Rome must be the mother of all rip-offs. He knew the price was a little steep, but evidently he feared for his safety so paid up via credit card before leaving and trying to report the incident to police. He was unsuccessful because he spoke no Italian and they no English. Eventually he was able to report the fraud and the mayor’s office is looking into it. He had been invited into the bar by a tout.
