Belize: Armed Robberies Near Guatemala Border

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | June 2nd, 2006 | Trackback

Two armed robberies of tourist groups within a month, the most recent May 15, were the latest in a string of almost monthly ambushes to occur in the Mountain Pine Ridge and Chiquibul Forest reserves. The bandits held up the groups in remote areas on Caracol Road and at Rio Frio Caves. Police believe the gang slipped through the border from Guatemala for the ambushes, then vanished again through the jungle. Authorities have asked tour companies to give them a month’s notice of groups going in so they can provide police escorts, and many tours do receive these escorts. Special patrol units have been placed in the area, but no one has been arrested.
